Petit aide[edit]

Cordialement, — Racconish💬 08:30, 20 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Notification about possible deletion[edit]

Some contents have been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether they should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at their entry.

If you created these pages, please note that the fact that they have been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. Bonne rentrée ?[edit]

Bonjour cher Racconish,

https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Deletion_requests/File:Identite-Pomme-2012-Sacem.jpg

Cordialement, — Racconish💬 11:48, 29 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Mark Twain at Stormfield[edit]

Hello there. I've been working to categorize media related to Mark Twain, which has proven to be quite a task. Yesterday I created a category for Edison's 1909 film Mark Twain at Stormfield. I've gone through the videos you uploaded, and became frustrated that I couldn't identify the young man who brings a hat to one of Twain's daughters. A search for some information about that led me to this page at Britannica. This is a far better copy of the film — more complete and at the correct speed. (It also appears that the YouTube film is backwards; I'm going to check for the placement of Twain's jacket pocket or some other clue confirming that.) Since the caption reads "Public domain video", is there a way you can get that print of the film somewhere and upload it here? Thanks so much for your help, once again. — WFinch (talk) 18:48, 30 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Bonne soirée JMGuyon (talk) 17:04, 12 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Bien cordialement--JMGuyon (talk) 17:59, 12 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Good morning.

I wanted to upload a new version of the file mentioned in the title from this source - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AQyi2evHclc&ab_channel=EpicEarth via video2commons. Due to the higher file quality and the fact that it is a restored version of the film from the recent Lobster Films Blu Ray release. However, I get an error DownloadError: b"ERROR: Unable to download video subtitles for 'live_chat': Expecting value: line 1 column 1 (char 0)"

Knowing that you upload silent films and have greater competences, could you upload a new version of "The King of Kings" from the source I provided?

Problèmes avec les dernières images ajoutées[edit]

Bonjour,

Cordialement, — Racconish💬 20:00, 19 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

The file is indeed too large, so phab:T353222. Yann (talk) 08:25, 12 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
The YouTube upload is an upscaled version of the fanmade reconstruction i created and uploaded to the Internet Archive back in 2016. It was assembled, alongside footage from the 1999 reconstrucion of the original cut (already uploaded in Commons by a third party), in SD so to keep the quality of the VHS main source, which is the one the current upload uses. Despite being in the public domain, my contributions tend to be omitted. If the file were to be superseded by my reconstruction, it would be nice to be credited at least in this site for once. Mayimbú, not sure I understand your point, but please feel free to correct source or credits if appropriate. — Racconish💬 09:42, 21 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Deletion_requests/Files_in_Category:Le_Corniaud

A new restoration of the film by the George Eastman Museum, with funding from a NFPF program aimed at films who have recenetly entered the public domain, was recently uploaded to YouTube. It contains some of the missing scenes and all the intertitles are reconstructed from the "original cutting continuity" despite having a GEM/2022 watermark.

I was thinking on uploading it as a separate file since yours got featured on MOTD early in the year, but dunno if it should be trimmed right from the MGM logo or from the introductory titles to the reconstruction, thus crediting both the NFPF and the GEM (for which the watermark is owed). Mayimbú (talk) 06:34, 20 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Mayimbú, uploading separately is appropriate if the copy is different (which seems to be the case since the length is different). I think the introduction is copyrighted and should be cut out, regardless of any credits in the file description. Cheers, — Racconish💬 07:48, 20 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Was checking in the copyright records if there was some registred copies of The Unknown. Before giving up, i looked in the back cover of the Blu-ray from which the restoration comes from and it reads: "The Unknown 2022 restoration under exclusive license from the George Eastman Museum. All rights reserved." Guess i have to keep the downloaded copy to myself. Mayimbú (talk) 05:41, 21 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Mayimbú, I beg to differ. Granted there are some new elements that justify copyright protection, such as music and extras, but we are only concerned here with the filmed sequences and the intertitles. The filmed part is clearly a mechanical restoration based on a French ans Czech prints, and not a creation. The new intertitles are "created" using the original cutting continuity, which is a listing of every scene/title in a film that had been used used by the original editors. IMO the latter process is not creative/original enough to justify copyright protection. — Racconish💬 09:35, 21 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Hi, I'm trying to understand what changes you made, your version has a resolution of 1,296 × 1,072, which is lower than @Yann's 1,920 × 1,080 version (and what I see when downloading from video.disney.com). Legoktm (talk) 17:27, 31 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I cropped out the black sides. — Racconish💬 19:30, 31 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Ah, makes sense. Could you overwrite it with this version? It's the same crop to remove the black borders, but it keeps the 1080p resolution, as otherwise MediaWiki will serve everyone 720p copies. Thanks! Legoktm (talk) 20:02, 31 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Also pinging @Yann :) Legoktm (talk) 20:34, 31 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
It seems to me your version has the black borders and in any case I suggest we should wait until the server will have handled the heavier versions. — Racconish💬 20:46, 31 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Huh? It's the same crop as yours, a width of 1,296. Maybe your client is adding the borders (e.g. VLC does)? I don't know what you mean by "I suggest we should wait until the server will have handled the heavier versions" given that when a new version is uploaded it has to redo the transcodes from scratch. Legoktm (talk) 20:49, 31 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Here's a snapshot from my version, no black borders on the side. Legoktm (talk) 20:52, 31 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
This is 1,296 × 1,080. I don't see how you could get anything bigger from Disney. Yann (talk) 20:56, 31 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Yann: to clarify, you uploaded a 1920x1080 version, and then Racoonish cropped it down to 1296x1072. I took your original version and redid the horizontal crop, but kept the same vertical height to get 1296x1080, which is what I'm asking for to be uploaded.

Yann (talk) 17:06, 1 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]

The Singing Fool (1928)[edit]

Would you be willing to get a copy of this film and upload it? Internet Archive's version appears to be cut off right towards the end, so is incomplete, and therefore not usable in its entirety. Sincere thanks to you if you can. PseudoSkull (talk) 23:53, 1 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Wikisource transcription syncing[edit]

I would like to kindly request to please be careful before you upload a new revision of a video file that no Wikisource transcription was already done of it. You can see the Wikisource transcription in the file usage (Index:, Page:, etc.). If the newer version of a video is considerably longer (or shorter), this can break the Wikisource transcription completely, since the timestamps become desynchronized. In other words, the timestamps pointing to certain times in the dialogue/scenery are out of sync and no longer correct.

Many times now I've discovered by accident that files linked to Wikisource transcriptions have been changed at Commons.

And if you change the language of the film in the original file, as was done at File:Santa Claus (1925).webm, the Wikisource transcription situation at s:Santa Claus (1925 film) becomes even more confusing.

I suppose while I'm here I should also ask you about File:The Wizard of Oz (1925).webm and s:The Wizard of Oz (1925 film), which has been broken for about a year. I am confused as to why the new HD revision is considerably shorter than the original revision. I know that there are content differences between the two revisions, making both of them incomplete. So I think they should be merged, but this would be time-consuming and tedious, and I've been scratching my head about that situation for a long time. In any case, the Wikisource transcription relies on an older revision, and some time ago, I actually had an incident at Wikisource where this was pointed out to me by another editor who was trying to verify some of the content in the film, but couldn't. PseudoSkull (talk) 12:15, 2 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@PseudoSkull: your initial upload of File:Santa Claus (1925).webm was defective (0s, 0bps) and the second one also, which is why I reverted it. But in any case I understand your concern and will be careful about it. — Racconish💬 12:49, 2 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Racconish: What do you mean it was defective? Is there any way to fix it back to the original, to Commons's standards? PseudoSkull (talk) 13:05, 2 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
As I said, zero seconds, zero bps : nothing to read, which is why I redid the conversion from scratch. — Racconish💬 13:36, 2 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I see. Well, unfortunately, the original video I got that file from doesn't exist anymore, and I don't know how to fix the BPS issue. I may still have the files locally. PseudoSkull (talk) 14:09, 2 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
