Please Stop moving to City Council[edit]

Local government areas are known as City of, Shire and some rare cases will have Council but moving City of Liverpool to Liverpool City Council was incorrect. The City Council is the administration not the government area. Bidgee (talk) 21:42, 20 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Bidgee: the name of the LGA is Liverpool City Council though and not “The City of Liverpool”. Is there something I’m missing? That’s the official name of the LGA. - Chris.sherlock2 (talk) 21:50, 20 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Liverpool City Council is not the LGA. Please do not move things you do not understand and please use COM:CFD from now on. Bidgee (talk) 21:52, 20 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Bidgee: Can you provide a source for that? I live in that LGA. Incidentally, I’ve been taking photos of the whole of the LGA, what do you think? I’ve noticed some fantastic photos you have taken, really great work! Anyway, if you could provide a source, I’d really appreciate it so I don't make mistakes. Peace :-) Chris.sherlock2 (talk) 21:57, 20 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Further more Dictionary of Sydney states that Liverpool City Council is the administration. LGA’s are named differently with the exception of some of the recent amalgamated LGAs. Bidgee (talk) 22:07, 20 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Hi @Bidgee: , I understand, but that wasn’t what I asked. Do you have a source that the LGA is officially called the City of Liverpool? It was my understanding, and backed up by the article Liverpool City Council in Wikipedia, that the LGA is now know as Liverpool City Council. I’m happy to be proven wrong, however it’s a bit confronting to be told I’m changing something I don’t know anything about, but no sources for the assertion have been supplied.
I am very happy to take this to CFD if that is what is needed. Thank you though for taking the time to message me. I appreciate your hard work and experience on Commons! - Chris.sherlock2 (talk) 22:13, 20 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
P.S. I’m currently spending the day taking photos of Hinchinbrook, I’m happy to find a source myself when I get back home. - Chris.sherlock2 (talk) 22:14, 20 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Office for Local Government typically uses just "Liverpool" however in one of the media releases the minister refers it to "city of Liverpool". Bidgee (talk) 22:19, 20 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
and further the history of the NSW gazette shows that "City of Liverpool" is administrated by "Liverpool City Council", nothing has changed today. Bidgee (talk) 22:26, 20 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Thank you. Not actually a definitive statement but for now it will do, I’ll look up the appropriate registers when I get home. I hope you are having a good day! - Chris.sherlock2 (talk) 22:29, 20 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
and NSW Gazette still has it as City of Liverpool. Bidgee (talk) 22:34, 20 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Bidgee: would you be willing to fix that on City of Liverpool (New South Wales)? - Chris.sherlock2 (talk) 22:38, 20 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Bidgee: thank you, and I am sorry about my mistake. - Chris.sherlock2 (talk) 22:52, 20 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I don't know if it's my place to comment on a LGA I'm not familiar with but I do know that the names change overtime. City of Randwick is now officially Randwick City Council. Municipality of Woollahra is now Woollahra Municipal Council. I know the CBD one is still 'City of Sydney' not 'Sydney City Council' even if you do look up their administration title it's still 'City of Sydney'. Looking up Liverpool is does appear to be 'Liverpool City Council' on all of their references. I think 'City of Liverpool' is their obsolete title. Category:Bays in Australia and Category:Bays in New South Wales[edit]

I'm not sure what you intended to do with Category:Bays in Australia and Category:Bays in New South Wales, given that we already have the longstanding Category:Bays of Australia (created 2007) and Category:Bays of New South Wales (created in 2010). I don't see any need for these new categories in parallel to the already existing ones so I have redirected them. Calistemon (talk) 13:56, 2 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Calistemon: Ah, I didn’t see those! I thought it was odd we didn’t have a bays category :-) really appreciate you fixing this up, and I also appreciate the message. - Chris.sherlock2 (talk) 14:21, 2 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
No worries. Most such categories (e.g. for natural features like rivers, lake, etc) for Australia and a large amount for the states and territories should already exist. If it doesn't show up under "of", try "in" and vice-versa. It's not always uniform. Happy editing! Calistemon (talk) 14:26, 2 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Thanks mate, this is definitely great advice. If you do see any other problems, please let me know and feel free to correct! My goal is to get our NSW LGA categories straightened a little - my true goal is to document first the South West and then move outwards. - Chris.sherlock2 (talk) 14:29, 2 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Similar sort of question: Do we require Category:Rivers through New South Wales when we already have Category:Rivers of New South Wales? Calistemon (talk) 19:46, 11 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Argh! I missed it again. No, of course now. I'll redirect. So sorry! - Chris.sherlock2 (talk) 20:16, 11 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Calistemon I see you did it already - thank you :-) and once again, sorry about missing that category! - Chris.sherlock2 (talk) 20:17, 11 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Harmonizing categories is forbidden; Criterion #4 is dedicated only for sets (one subject, one day, one author), one photo divided into many parts (Thames 1/100; Thames 2/100, etc.), Wikisource's books or for templates (BSicon and others). In such a case you can use Criterion #2 (meaningless name) or #3 (error, mistake). Wieralee (talk) 14:05, 16 April 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Oh, thanks Wieralee! I didn't realise. I'll remember this in future. Thanks for letting me know :-) - Chris.sherlock2 (talk) 14:12, 16 April 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I noticed that you uploaded a file using the name File:BrightonLeSands1.jpg. A file by this name already existed on Commons. Overwriting an existing file should not be done except when making minor, uncontroversial corrections, so the file has been restored to its previous version. Autopatrol given[edit]

Hello. I just wanted to let you know that I have granted autopatrol rights to your account; the reason for this is that I believe you are sufficiently trustworthy and experienced to have your contributions automatically marked as "reviewed". This has no effect on your editing, it is simply intended to make it easier for users that are monitoring Recent changes or Recent uploads to find unproductive edits amidst the productive ones like yours. In addition, the Flickr upload feature and an increased number of batch-uploads in UploadWizard, uploading of freely licensed MP3 files, the possibility to overwrite files uploaded by others and an increased limit for page renames per minute are now available to you. Thank you. —‍Mdaniels5757 (talk • contribs) 01:29, 2 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Suburb of Sydney[edit]

Sardaka, there is a suburb called Sydney.

Sorry, but your change to "Suburb of Sydney" has to be changed. It should be Suburbs of Sydney" etc. Sardaka (talk) 09:46, 9 June 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Sardaka no, that's not correct. There is literally a suburb called "Sydney". So to be clear, there is a region called Sydney, there is a City of Sydney and there is a Sydney CBD. And then in the Sydney CBD there is a suburb named Sydney. I didn't make this up :-) Chris.sherlock2 (talk) 10:07, 9 June 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
You're right. Sardaka (talk) 08:19, 10 June 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Sardaka all good. Incidentally, can I just say how much I admire your photography? It is amazing in its depth and quality - thank you so much for your efforts! I wish I could have such quality, it’s inspiring. - Chris.sherlock2 (talk) 08:22, 10 June 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I created this map so I can explain that the area in blue is officially 'Sydney' itself. Everything in blue comes up with the address of 'Sydney, 2000' e.g. Maritime Museum, The Opera House, The NSW Art Gallery, Vibe Hotel. Technically speaking it's not a 'suburb', it's a 'city' however that's just semantics. I created this map as there was no existing map outlining the official overview of 'Sydney' itself. The 'City of Sydney' is the council LGA and the postcode 2000 is extended to the suburbs north and south of 'Sydney' including The Rocks, Dawes Point, Millers Point, Barangaroo and Haymarket with the Australia Post website also showing further use of the postcode 2000 with 'Parliament House' and 'Sydney South' which I've just included in 'Sydney'. The 'Sydney CBD' is a tricky one as you could say everything in blue is The 'Sydney CBD' but then you're including Darling Harbour and The Royal Botanic Garden as part of The CBD. Alternatively one could assume The Sydney CBD is unofficially carved within the boundaries of The Western Distributor, The Cahill Expressway, Macquarie Street, Elizabeth Street and Goulburn Street but that's just a guessing game really. I feel even if you were to email 'City of Sydney' they wouldn't be able to say what 'Sydney CBD' officially is, I bet they wouldn't even have a map like this which outlines 'Sydney' officially. Mapper2000 (talk) 03:34, 13 June 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Yes, it is strange. According to the NSW Planning Portal Spatial Viewer, they consider "Sydney" to be a city, but actually the City of Sydney is the LGA. So it's more like a suburb than a city. The Sydney CBD, however, is defined - I'll have to find the official PDF that showed the suburbs (the City of Sydney did another website redesign and now it's hard to find the info that was so easy to find only weeks ago!). - Chris.sherlock2 (talk) 05:42, 13 June 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I think the administrative council is 'City of Sydney' but when they say 'Sydney' is a city as in it's a city centre of the greater metropolitan region so it's an area that's like a suburb but officially it's not an actually suburb because it's not 'suburban' it's a city centre or as it's referred to 'Sydney Central Business District'. It's really just semantics, as far as Australia post is concerned 'Sydney 2000' acts like any other suburb for them I'm sure. I would love to see an officially defined map of Sydney CBD by City of Sydney Council because I couldn't find anything like that online and I just assumed the official city 'Sydney' (everything in blue) was as close as I'd ever get to a definition of The CBD. Mapper2000 (talk) 07:16, 13 June 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
No, I actually got on the phone to the City of Sydney. You were correct in your early prediction: The CBD is informally pretty much the boundaries shown when you look at it on Google maps. I will see if I can find the PDF where they outlined this, but I may have lost it. I actually asked the City of Sydney for a copy of the map they use but they said it is for internal use only.
It seems like a lot of Sydney is informal. The only boundary-like things that are formalised are LGAs, suburbs, counties and parishes! So I really think your maps are very good. - Chris.sherlock2 (talk) 08:50, 13 June 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Thank you I really do appreciate that. This map is exact to suburb boundaries, the only slight shifts are the very southern parts of Central Station which I've put in yellow are actually in Chippendale and Prince Alfred Park also in yellow actually belongs to Surry Hills. I felt including all of Central Station and Prince Alfred Park in Inner City South was more appropriate than saying parts of Central Station are Inner City West and Prince Alfred Park is Inner City East when they're both directly south of The CBD and aren't residential. Mapper2000 (talk) 09:11, 13 June 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Thank you. It's not often we get any positive feedback around here. Sardaka (talk) 10:04, 17 June 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Sardaka I am constantly amazed by the work Australians are putting into commons. I just saw your shots of Berowra station - I used to live about 150 meters from the station and those brought back memories! Great shots, let me know if I can help associate anything with Wikidata. Perhaps one day we could colllaborate - even meet up with a group from commons! - Chris.sherlock2 (talk) 18:14, 17 June 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Sydney Article on Wikivoyage[edit]

Hi Chris

If you genuinely like my maps of Sydney I would appreciate it if you perhaps included some feedback on https://en.wikivoyage.org/wiki/Talk:Sydney. There I've been trying to improve and update the old district structure of Sydney however no one there is really backing up my new scheme with the new maps. Your feedback there would be very much appreciated. Just try not to get into any debates with the users on that talk page, they can be quite stubborn in their opinions of holding onto the old maps and their reasoning isn't really justified beyond pure complacency. If you don't want to get involved in the discussions I understand, just thought I'd ask. Mapper2000 (talk) 09:42, 13 June 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Category discussion warning

May 2017 in Waverley Municipal Council has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category.

In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!

Hi Chris.sherlock2, you're now a filemover. When moving files please respect the following advice:

  • Use the CommonsDelinker link in the {{Rename}} template to order a bot to replace all ocurrences of the old title with the new one. Or, if there was no rename-request, please use the Move & Replace-tab.
  • Please leave a redirect behind unless you have a valid reason not to do so. Other projects, including those using InstantCommons, might be using the file even though they don't show up in the global usage. Deleting the redirects would break their file references. Please see this section of the file rename guideline for more information.
  • Please know and follow the file rename guidelines.
